Finding Excitement in Spring's Unfolding
“A life you have held is a life you cherish. “ — Wendy
Physical Setting & Preparation
Find a space where you can feel the energy of the awakening earth—near a window with a view of growing things or outdoors if weather permits. Arrange before you symbols of spring's dynamic energy: sprouting seeds or buds, feathers representing the return of birds, a small bell or chime, and a vessel of fresh water. If possible, include something red or orange to represent the fire of excitement. Sit with your spine straight yet relaxed, your chest open, allowing energy to flow freely. Position your hands slightly raised, palms facing each other about six inches apart, as if holding an invisible ball of energy. Take twenty-two rhythmic breaths—one for each day that has passed in this month—feeling the space between your palms becoming warm and active with each inhale, as excitement builds momentum within you
Opening Invocation | Fosgladh
Air an dàrna latha fichead den Mhàrt,
Anns an ùine ùr seo de sholas a' fàs,
Nuair a tha beatha a' briseadh a-mach às gach àite,
Tha mi a' faireachdainn beo-eòlas ag èirigh.
A Mhàthair na talmhainn, treòraich mo thogradh.
On this twenty-second day of March,
In this new time of growing light,
When life is breaking forth from every place,
I feel excitement rising.
Mother of the earth, guide my enthusiasm.
Feel the vibrant energy of late March—the twenty-second day—when spring's emergence accelerates perceptibly. Buds swell visibly on branches, birdsong increases in volume and variety, daylight stretches noticeably longer. This mirrors the experience of excitement—a quickening of energy, a sense of possibilities multiplying. Notice the dynamic quality in the air around you, how it seems charged with potential. Visualize your excitement as a bright, effervescent energy in your solar plexus, sparkling outward through your entire being, just as the earth radiates renewed vitality through every unfurling leaf and emerging blossom.
Body of the Working | Corp
Tha beo-eòlas mar uisge an earraich,
A' ruith luath, làn de bheatha ùr.
Tha e a' teagasg dhuinn gluasad le miann,
Mar a ghluaiseas lusan a dh'ionnsaigh solas.
Excitement is like spring water,
Running fast, full of new life.
It teaches us to move with desire,
As plants move toward light.
Ring the bell or chime, listening to how its vibration ripples outward, activates the air, then gradually settles. This is the nature of healthy excitement—a wave of energy that moves through you, inspiring action but eventually finding harmony. Feel the resonance of the sound with your entire body. This is the gift of the Mother Earth, who understands that excitement is not merely an emotion but a vital force that drives creation and growth.
Now, bring your awareness to your body. Where do you feel excitement most strongly? Perhaps in your heart as a quickening, in your limbs as restless energy, or in your breath as it becomes more animated. As you locate these sensations, acknowledge them with appreciation rather than attempting to contain them. With each breath, imagine the Mother's wisdom helping you to channel this vibrant energy—not to diminish it, but to direct it purposefully, just as spring directs its exuberant growth through the established patterns of root, stem, leaf, and flower.
The Deep Working | An Obair Dhomhain
A Mhàthair na talmhainn, teagaisg dhomh,
Mar a chleachdas mi mo bheo-eòlas gu glic,
Chan ann mar lasair a loisgeas,
Ach mar theine a bhlàthaicheas agus a shoillsicheas.
Cuidich mi gus mo neart a stiùireadh le rùn.
Mother of the earth, teach me,
How to use my excitement wisely,
Not as a flame that burns,
But as a fire that warms and illuminates.
Help me to direct my energy with purpose.
Take the vessel of water in your hands, observing how it contains yet allows movement within its boundaries. Close your eyes and imagine yourself standing beside a spring-fed stream that has just broken free from winter's ice. The water rushes clear and bright over rocks and roots, finding its way with both freedom and direction. The banks guide without restricting, allowing the water's natural enthusiasm to flow productively rather than destructively.
In this sacred space of channeled energy, the Mother of the Earth approaches. She moves with graceful purpose, her steps light yet grounded, embodying the perfect balance of excitement and intention that you seek. Her eyes sparkle with the same clear energy as the stream, and flowers seem to bloom in her footsteps, responding to her vibrant presence.
"Excitement is life force made conscious," she speaks, her voice melodious and energizing. "Many fear its power and try to suppress it, but this only leads to stagnation or eventual flooding. The wise gardener does not fear the rush of spring growth but provides trellises and pathways to guide it."
She kneels beside the stream and places her hands just above the rushing water. The flow responds to her presence, becoming more harmonious but no less powerful. "This is the art of working with excitement," she explains. "Not containment, but conscious direction."
She invites you to place your hands beside hers above the water. As you do, you feel the stream's energy flowing up into your palms and arms—invigorating but not overwhelming. "Feel how it moves through natural channels," she instructs. "Your body, like the earth, has pathways designed for energy to flow. When you honor these pathways, excitement becomes not a chaotic force but a powerful ally."
She guides you to stand and extend your arms outward, palms facing forward. "Direct this energy toward your heart's true desires," she continues. "Excitement without purpose disperses quickly. Excitement with intention creates lasting transformation."
You feel the energy focusing and clarifying, becoming not less powerful but more precise—like a scattered light being focused into a beam. "This is how spring creates so much growth from limited resources," she smiles. "Through the perfect marriage of enthusiasm and direction."
Feel her wisdom integrating with your own energetic system, creating balanced pathways for excitement to flow productively. Remain in this connection for several minutes, breathing deeply.
Afterthought | Smuain Dheiridh
Take a moment to contemplate:
What emerging possibilities most naturally excite me as this season unfolds? How might I channel my enthusiasm to nourish rather than overwhelm my projects and relationships? In what ways can I honor excitement as a sacred energy while directing it with wisdom and intention?
Closing Blessing | Beannachd Dheiridh
Tha mi a' toirt taing dhut, a Mhàthair na talmhainn,
Airson do bheothalachd agus do threòrachadh.
Mar a stiùireas tu neart an earraich tro gach freumh is geug,
Mar sin stiùiridh mi mo bheo-eòlas tro gach smuain is gnìomh.
Tha mi a' giùlan do dheòin cruthachail leam.
I give thanks to you, Mother of the earth,
For your vitality and your guidance.
As you direct spring's strength through every root and branch,
So will I direct my excitement through every thought and deed.
I carry your creative will with me.
Ring the bell or chime once more, noticing how its sound affects you differently now. Touch the sprouting seeds or buds, honoring the directed energy they embody. If you have a red or orange object, hold it briefly, acknowledging the transformative power of well-channeled fire. Finally, touch the water, recognizing how it demonstrates both freedom and direction as it flows within its vessel.
Rise slowly, carrying the earth's creative wisdom within you. Know that on this twenty-second of March, as spring's momentum builds throughout the natural world, you too can embrace excitement not as a disruption but as a powerful creative force—one that, when consciously directed, can bring your deepest intentions into beautiful manifestation.
