Meditation: May 15th, 2025
"The ancient ones knew that patience is not passive waiting, but active presence with what is unfolding. The seed does not force the blossom, yet neither does it neglect its purpose."
Physical Setting & Preparation
Find a place where you can witness life in multiple stages of development—perhaps a garden where some plants are just sprouting while others are in full bloom, a forest edge with both young saplings and mature trees, or simply a patch of earth where various plants grow at different rates. Bring a small container of water to represent flow and a seed or stone to represent potential. Sit or stand with your spine aligned but relaxed, allowing your shoulders to release tension while maintaining alertness in your posture.
Opening Invocation | Fosgladh
Air a' chòigeamh latha deug de Chèitean
On the fifteenth day of May
Nuair a tha gach nì a' fàs aig an astar fhèin
When everything grows at its own pace
Eadar lusan luath is craobhan sàmhach
Between quick herbs and quiet trees
Tha mise cuideachd a' sireadh mo rithim nàdarra
I too seek my natural rhythm
Feel the energies of mid-May surrounding you—the world pulsing with growth, yet each living thing following its own inherent timing. Some flowers have already bloomed and begun to form seeds, while others still prepare to open. Birds that began nesting early now feed growing young, while later nesters only now complete their preparations. The sun strengthens toward summer solstice, warming the earth at nature's measured pace. In this season of diverse rhythms, we work with the emotional states of patience and anticipation—two seemingly opposite yet perfectly complementary approaches to time and becoming.
Body of the Working | Corp
Mar a' chraobh a' fàs bliadhna an dèidh bliadhna
Like the tree growing year after year
Mar am flùr a' fosgladh nuair a tha an t-àm ceart
Like the flower opening when the time is right
Mar sin tha mise—foighidneach is dùrachdach
So am I—patient and expectant
On this fifteenth day of May, we explore the twin energies of patience and anticipation that govern all natural processes. In the world around us, these apparently contradictory qualities exist not in opposition but in perfect harmony.
Patience and anticipation—the twin faces of wise relationship with time.
Foighidinn—sàmhach, làithreach, a' gabhail ris na tha ann
Patience—quiet, present, accepting what is
Dùil—beòthail, dòchasach, a' coimhead air adhart
Anticipation—lively, hopeful, looking forward
Feel patience arising within you—the steady, present awareness that accepts the natural timing of all things. This is the quiet confidence of the oak that adds growth rings one by one, the sustainable persistence of water wearing away stone, the unhurried wisdom of the Earth herself whose processes unfold over eons. Allow this patience to settle into your body, creating a sense of spacious presence that neither rushes nor resists what is unfolding.
Now, feel anticipation blossoming alongside patience—the vibrant alertness to emerging possibilities. This is the eager readiness of the bud preparing to open, the hopeful vigilance of the fox watching a rabbit trail, the joyful expectation of rain-ready soil. Let this anticipation brighten your awareness, creating a sense of enlivened attention to what might emerge in the next moment, hour, or season.
Ann am foighidinn, tha mi a' gabhail ris an làthair
In patience, I accept the present
Ann an dùil, tha mi a' fàilteachadh na tha ri teachd
In anticipation, I welcome what is coming
Còmhla, tha iad a' cruthachadh dàimh ghlic ri tìm
Together, they create a wise relationship with time
Allow both emotional states to exist simultaneously within you. Notice how patience without anticipation can become passive resignation disconnected from purpose. Observe how anticipation without patience can become anxious craving that misses the present moment. Together, they create true wisdom—the grounded hopefulness that characterizes all thriving natural systems.
The Deep Working | An Obair Dhomhain
Anail a-steach, aimsir an làthair
Breath in, present time
Anail a-mach, aimsir ri teachd
Breath out, future time
Eadar an dà aimsir, tha fìrinn na beatha
Between the two times, is the truth of life
Visualize yourself as a flowering tree in mid-May. Your roots and trunk embody patience—the result of steady growth over many seasons, neither rushed nor delayed but unfolding at exactly the right pace. Simultaneously, your buds and blossoms embody anticipation—poised at the edge of becoming, alive with potential energy, ready to open when conditions are right.
Feel patience in your lower body—the pelvis, legs, and feet establishing unhurried connection with the earth's ancient rhythms. Feel anticipation in your upper body—the chest, arms, and head energized with attentive readiness for new possibilities.
Tha foighidinn is dùil mar dhà phàirt den aon cheòl
Patience and anticipation are like two parts of the same music
Aon a' cumail an rithim seasmhach
One maintaining the steady rhythm
Am fear eile a' seinn an fhonn a tha ri teachd
The other singing the melody that is to come
Now imagine that you can sense the heartbeat of the Earth Mother beneath you—the primal rhythm that has sustained life for billions of years. With each beat, feel how she balances perfect patience with perfect anticipation. Nothing in nature is truly static—even in apparent stillness, everything prepares for its next expression. And nothing in nature truly rushes—even in rapid growth, everything follows its inherent timing.
Bring your awareness to places in your life where patience and anticipation meet. Perhaps in creative work, relationships, healing processes, or spiritual growth. See how the Earth Mother teaches that these qualities strengthen rather than oppose each other—patience creating the fertile ground from which anticipated growth can emerge, anticipation giving patient waiting its meaningful direction.
A' Mhàthair Thalmhainn, teagaisg dhomh an dannsa seo
Earth Mother, teach me this dance
Eadar gabhail ri na tha ann
Between accepting what is
Agus dùil ri na tha ri teachd
And anticipating what is to come
Ann ad làthair, gheibh mi gliocas an dà shealladh
In your presence, I find the wisdom of both perspectives
Rest in this integrated awareness for several breaths. Feel how patience and anticipation naturally balance each other when given conscious attention—patience grounding anticipation in present reality, anticipation giving patience its hopeful orientation toward becoming. This is the temporal wisdom exemplified by all thriving natural systems, from the smallest seedling to the mightiest forest.
Afterthought | Smuain Dheiridh
Take a moment to contemplate:
How might embracing both patience and anticipation transform your relationship with time and growth processes in your life? What wisdom does the Earth Mother offer about the proper pace and rhythm of meaningful change?
Closing Blessing | Beannachd Dheiridh
Buidheachas don Mhàthair Thalmhainn
Gratitude to the Earth Mother
Airson foighidinn a bheir dhomh fois
For patience that gives me rest
Airson dùil a bheir dhomh dòchas
For anticipation that gives me hope
Gun robh an cothromachadh seo annam
May this balance be within me
Mar a tha e ann an cuairt nan ràithean
As it is in the cycle of the seasons
Beannachd leibh, a spioradan an àite seo
Blessings with you, spirits of this place
Gum bi sìth eadarainn gus an till mi
May there be peace between us until I return
