Chapter 8's conquest of Ai (הָעַי ha-Ai - literally "the ruin") showcases divine endorsement of deception and ambush tactics. God explicitly tells Joshua to set an ambush (אֹרֵב orev), contradicting numerous other biblical passages about God hating deception. The Hebrew wordplay is intentional - they're literally creating "the ruin" through divinely sanctioned treachery.

The Deuteronomic law (Deut. 21:22-23) says anyone hung on a tree is cursed by God, yet here God commands it.
