Got it! (From Wikipedia) Levi - 3rd son of Jacob and Leah yielded the Tribe of Levi. Tribe of Levi had particular religious duties for the Israelites, i.e. political (administering cities of refuge) and educational responsibilities. The only tribe to not get a land grant. They got the cities instead.

Political and Leviticus would seem to go hand and hand. Throw in educational and you get a perfect storm of self-dealing bullshit. Subset of Levites were Kohanim, who did the holiness stuff at the Temple. The Torah suggests that Levites were landless cultic functionaries.

So Leviticus appears, not out of nowhere, but rather as a political function within the Israelite corpus. What could possible go wrong? Still doesn't explain where the cruelty came from.

Who the hell is Leviticus anyway that he gets to bless all these bullshit rules? Genesis, Kings, Judges, Psalms, etc., etc., etc., all have understandable names that (sort of) describes their content. Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John are recognizable people who knew Jesus. Even Paul and his epiphany on the road to Damascus is known by the cities he wrote letter to. But Leviticus appears, apparently out of nowhere, spouting a return to Bronze Age cruelty. Why??

Never mind. Found it in Wikipedia. It's from the 3rd book of Moses conversation with God. It seems to be taken from the Greek, "He called...", the first words of the book. Sort of like "Psalms", only not nearly as clear. According to Wikipedia, it took a long time to pull together, ending up almost into the CE. As pointed out in the essay, it was written by the priestly class. Sort of like the ethics rules written by the Supreme Court for the Supreme Court. I'm wondering now if Leviticus was the template for Project 2025.

I am intrigued by all your references to gnosticism as almost an inversion of judeo-christian stories. Some essays on that would be interesting. Or do you have any literature you'd recommend?

I’ve a few parts on that subject coming , it’ll just take a while to get there , have to get through the main body of the text first

Nothing like guilt and fear to brighten up your day. The religious "fathers/males" protected and perfected it through the millennia until we now have head coverings, below-the knee skirts, help-meets instead of wives; forbidden: dancing, playing cards, consuming alcohol. We have persecution of Blacks, browns, gays, trans, etc. having fun in any way, shape or form. Unless you're a Church authority diddling little kids. Makes me want to throw something or someone.

Ick, double ick, and triple ick. (Purity is highly overrated, according to these rules.)
