Wendy, I enjoy your writing, and appreciate your scholarship. When I began to understand history in a cyclical rather than linear way, it made me realize that we really haven’t made that much progress as a civilization. I’m reading Neil Howe’s The Fourth Turning, which makes a lot of sense regarding our current situation.
Howes turning is paramount in explaining that institutions crumble, society fractures along generational lines, and the old order collapses in violent upheaval. Like winter’s brutal grip, it strips away illusions, forcing communities to rebuild from ash and bone

- 🎯 **Polarizing Rhetoric**: They used divisive language to energize their bases, sometimes casting out-groups (immigrants, political opponents, etc.) as threats.
- 🏛️ **Challenges to Institutions**: Critics argue both leaders questioned or undermined democratic institutions or norms.
- 👥 **Cult of Personality**: Their leadership styles fostered intense personal loyalty, sometimes eclipsing traditional party structures.

Honestly it necessary for EVERYONE to understand why this is true, and how the parallels exist. Trump is a Shadow Nazi....the speeches are the same, the language is the same. The meanings are all the same. THOSE parallels exist.

From a UK perspective we are seeing a similar, though not as charismatic demagogue in Farage and his fascist ideologues support, in Europe this lurch to fascism is even worse. Progressives must unite internationally to oppose this coordinated ideological putsch.
