One of the best things I’ve ever read here. I remember when LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act and said we’d lost the South for the next 50 years. He was right, but Try more like forever. Go Wendy.

It's their way of showing they're important to Taco Don. That and 75 cents may get them a small coffee as well as deported too.

I’ve already argued with those assholes for years and they just won’t believe the southern strategy ever happened, but I lived through it and I saw it happen. They now scream fake news and try to rewrite history and that’s why we need to study history because here we go again.

Just amazing: ""You start out in 1954 by saying, 'Nigger, nigger, nigger,'" Atwater explained with the casual brutality of a sociopath discussing the weather. "By 1968 you can't say 'nigger'—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights, and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now that you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is that blacks get hurt worse than whites.""

This was well underway before 1968. Essentially, the cosmopolitan Republicans (there were liberal and even progressive wings that dwarfed the nascent "conservatives" in the Republicans) were excised, as the Mid Western "industrial" power centers used the newfound "Southern" expansion of Republicans to begin wresting control from the moneyed elites on the east coast (the Wall Street contingent), and the advent of civil rights legislation were a catalyst in this transformation.

This is why I expect that the CRA to be completely gutted before Donaldo Shitzburger's term ends (and I expect it to end when he dies, not at the end of his 4 year term).

It took nearly 60 years for us to get here. It will take a few decades to unwind this shitstorm. How long until Amy Coney Barrett retires or dies? At least that long me thinks.

A true tour de force Wendy!

SO so so good to see artists depict the dirty diaper in a white hood. Accuracy is appreciated!

Many years ago, when I was a flag waving Tea Party, Grand Old Party, self righteous Republican, my Democrat sister once asked, "You're a conservative, aren't you?" in a tone that sounded a lot like, "You're an axe murderer, aren't you?" I've thought about that many times since. Yeah, I was certain I was on the "right" side and nothing could sway me. And the entire rest of my family could go pound salt; I was "Right". I skated through the first Terrible Trump administration by not paying attention. My rabid Republican husband had passed (God rest his soul) and I wasn't able to think for myself. Then I moved from Missouri back to New York. Then the election denial started. Then Jan. 6 happened. Luckily the MSM were up to the task of actually reporting some of the news. It was pretty much and in-your-face season and anyone who wasn't impacted by this had to have been living in a deserted mine shaft. My transition wasn't even that painful, probably because of my parents' instilling in me a sense of right from wrong.

What's the point, Jan? The point is I am so grateful to you, Wendy, for making sense out of the mess that is my history. Not pretty, not warm and fuzzy, but hard truths that, at times, made me go, "Damn" and slap myself on the forehead. Thank you, Wendy. I will definitely restack, share, and do whatever else needs to be done. I love my substack family. Thanks for reading this.

It's a shame these white fuckwads don't realize what pos's they are...another thing is why there are black politicians in the maga party...what are they fucking thinking? It's like Cruz and Rubio voting to have their fellow Latinos kicked out of the country. Are they that much of traitors to their own?

You nailed it, Wendy! Now we need to hit every Republican over the head with it. It's so blatantly obvious that one wonders how they can keep up the charade (of course Dumptrump doesn't bother, he lives in his own world of fantasy self adoration). I still go back to the basic premise. Of course it's wrong, and evil, and unjust, but also it's just so damned boring! My adult ADHD cannot stand the idea of an all white world! All white is sooo sterile. Can we have a little mess here? Can we have a little color (a lot of color)? I had a friend once, who told me that she cut the noise makers out of all her kids' toys. I was aghast! My god, kids need to make noise! (I was the obnoxious parent who went through toy departments pushing all the buttons that made the toy fire trucks blast their sirens.) it's time we all made a big noise to take our country back!

My cousin gave us a loud cymbal banging, drum playing rabbit when my eldest was a year old. They thought they were going to drive us crazy, but I played with that toy more than the kid did!

Love your analysis Wendy. I wish you’d say more about what I consider the Republican party’s prime directive: tax breaks for the rich. The racial cruelty is just red meat to keep the rubes occupied while their pocket is picked. Thing is, I’m not sure the Democrats are much different, as the obvious solution is to tax the fuck out of the rich. But they don’t seem to be advocating for that, do they?

Yup to ALL of it! That line is usually followed by saying "something, something, Robert Byrd."

Just as did Justice Hugo Black, Byrd renounced his past & worked hard for civil rights. Like the Party, they moved forward, not regressed like the current Republicans.

The Party that had heavyweights like Everett Dirkson forging an alliance with LBJ to pass the Civil Rights Act is no more. It no longer exists -- only MAGA. This GOP is simply using the administrative skeleton of that party -- a "Truth in Labeling Act" would quickly announce them as across-the-board racists (along with all the other disparate prejudices that are part of that).

It's why I've never bought into the "anti-T**** Republicans," if they're anti-T, they aren't Republicans any more. The Party is dead, but the corpse is still staggering about pretending it has agency.
