In the mid 50's to the mid 60's, I lived in the land of missile bases; Montana, Wyoming (North Dakota not far away). Never did duck and cover (like a school desk will protect anyone to begin with) but was aware of the danger.
I'm younger than you, but a friend of mine who's been in the military for many years says that they told kids to get under desks so as to protect them from any falling debris, not because they actually thought a desk would deflect nukes 😂 still doesn't make any sense in the larger scheme of things though, I agree.
Never worked in restaurants. Retail, picture framing (satisfaction guaranteed), warehouse stuff. Dealing with humgry people sounded like a losing proposition.
