Thank you for this history. History without erasure is important to understand the full human condition.

I came of age in the 60s. Every film I saw that had gay or lesbian themes left me depressed. I wondered if what was depicted was what the rest of my life would actually hold. Turns out that it didn't but even now, knowing what I know about my own queer history, seeing those movies again sets off the old feelings of depression. I'm guessing that I'm not the only person reacting badly to those movies.

Wow! Excellent article. I had no idea about pre-Hayes Code Hollywood. I will definitely be tracking some of these movies down. I wish I'd known about them sooner.

Brilliant article. Very informative. I wonder how Hollywood and The World would be if someone had just told Will Hay to take his code and shove it? Or where Hollywood And Broadway The World would be if Will Hays hadn't been born?

This article is fantastic and eye-opening. I will definitely look for ways to watch these films through Kanopy, etc. Thanks for sharing it. I'm tired of explaining to people that queerness is NOT a recent trend or experimental phase.

I wonder if my library's streaming channel, Kanopy, will be adding those films. Great article, BTW.
