Can we stop using redneck as a slur? Without the rednecks, you wouldn’t have labor rights and the fact that you probably don’t know what I’m talking about means you shouldn’t be using that term lol #BattleofBlairMountain
I’m Appalachian and West Virginian, you’re trying to explain my own history to me. West Virginia had a strong anti slavery stance, which is how West Virginia became a thing. I know it’s trendy to shit talk my culture while actively exploiting it, but MTG has never worked a day in her life so even if we’re pretending that the phrase means “someone who works outside in the sun” it’s still not an applicable slur? Don’t just Wikipedia these things, actually research and sit with it. The hardworking antiracists of the global south will thank you.
It's possible to honor the courage of the miners you are talking about without pretending that rural white working-class culture hasn't also been a major force behind racial terrorism and queer oppression. History's messy like that.
But if you would like to ignore that, there are im sure a few other things that I can ignore in my writing, that would bother you also.
Where you are wrong, and the reason that I used it on Marjorie Taylor Greene was entirely caused by this shit that you failed to remember.
The word "redneck" didn't start with Blair Mountain. It was already being used for poor white farmers whose necks got burned working in the sun. And here's the uncomfortable truth - many of the same communities and cultural groups that produced these labor heroes also produced generations of KKK members, Jim Crow enforcers, and people who've fought tooth and nail against civil rights, gay rights, and basically every progressive cause you can name.
More than a few "Rednecks" hung persons of color in Lynchings and killings over time. You would like for people to ignore that fact?
Or, should I just tell the kid at my child's highschool that the Confederate flag he's waving from his truck is him just expressing his freedom of speech by waving NOT a hate symbol around?
So when you say "rednecks gave you labor rights," you are not wrong about Blair Mountain's importance to the labor movement. Those miners' blood and sacrifice did help pave the way for unions and worker protections. But acting like this automatically makes the term non-problematic ignores the fact that "redneck" culture has also been deeply complicit in some of America's worst impulses around race, sexuality, and social justice.
Your Statement is PARTIALLY true - But its a LOT more complicated that just that.
The True part:
Yeah, the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921 was absolutely massive - 10,000 coal miners basically went to war against company thugs and corrupt sheriffs. These miners wore red bandannas to tell friend from foe, and they called themselves the "Red Neck Army." This wasn't some lily-white good ol' boys club either - one in five miners was Black, a third were immigrants from all over Europe. They were fighting and dying together for basic human dignity: the right to not get shot for joining a union, to not live in company-owned shacks, to not get paid in fake money only good at the company store.
1. She does not even have an office, just a PO Box in Dalton, GA.
2. She is popular in her district because it's a hotbed of John Birch Society and KKK. I know because my relatives live there!
3. She's a dumb blonde bitch still waiting to get her pussy grabbed . . .
Large Marge
That’s the phyllis Diller hairstyle.
First you freeze it, then break it off.
